When Don Conrad upgraded his heating system in July of 2003, he was met with skepticism from his neighbours. “My neighbors thought I was nuts and I was going to freeze to death,” he said with a laugh. “How will you ever get heat out of frozen ground, is what I used to hear.” But the naysayers didn’t stop Conrad, who in 2003 installed a Nordic water to air heat pump to provide economical heating and air conditioning for his home.
The three-ton system provides forced air heating air conditioning for Conrad’s 1,900 square foot home in Nova Scotia, Canada, and has never relied on the electric back-up heating that was installed as a precaution for system failure. In fact, besides changing the air filters, Conrad has only had maintenance performed on the machine once in 15 years, to change a fan belt.
“This unit has been a joy to own,” says Conrad, noting that “Now that heat pumps are more available they (his neighbours) think it was a great idea!”
Since Nordic geothermal heat pumps are built to last 20 years or more, Conrad can expect to enjoy his energy efficient heating and cooling system for another decade or more.
