Hope For New Brunswick Heat Pump Rebates

For the latest updates on NB Power Heat Pump Rebates, visit our latest blog post published on October 1st, 2015: NB Power Announces New Rebates on Heat Pumps.

On December 12th Energy Minister Donald Arsenault announced a bill that would dissolve Efficiency New Brunswick. The Crown Corporation had been responsible for administering a variety of energy efficiency grants for homeowners. These grants helped offset the cost of energy-efficient home upgrades and helped New Brunswickers save money while creating jobs in the construction industry.

These grants were available for a wide variety of energy efficiency upgrades, including a $5,000 grant for retrofitting your home with a geothermal heat pump. In September 2014, these grants were discontinued due to lack of funding and the future of these programs has been unclear until now.

Going forward, the programs administered by Efficiency New Brunswick will now be handled by NB Power. The move was designed to maximize the energy efficiency initiatives for homeowners while also saving money for taxpayers. President and CEO of NB Power, Gaëtan Thomas said that NB Power will create a new unit to handle these programs and that the unit will actively find ways to help New Brunswickers save money and stop using power they do not need.

While there was no mention of whether the traditional energy efficiency heat pump rebates that were administered by Efficiency New Brunswick will return, this new move aimed at improving the province’s energy efficiency initiatives bring hope that these grants have not been eliminated forever, and will be reinstated in some form, in the near future.

Mid June, CBC TV Saint John suggested an incentive program for heat pumps would soon be forthcoming. Any update?

      Hi David,

We’ve heard that rumour too but haven’t had any firm confirmation on it yet. As soon as we know, we’ll write a blog post on it!

Nova Scotia power has a financing program for converting to heat pumps: http://www.nspower.ca/en/home/for-my-home/heating-solutions/heat-pumps/heat-pump-financing.aspx , why is it so difficult for NB Power and our government to do the same?

      Hi John,
We’re unsure as to why there is no NB Power program similar to the NS Power program. We’ll keep you posted on any developments.

I heard about the new program that the NB government will be introducing starting Oct 1st. We have been waiting to install a heat pump after hearing from our installer that there was a new program coming in October. What a rip off… It only gives a rebate on the 12,000 BTU models which only covers up to 1,000 sqft… most homes today require a minimum of 18,000 BTU units. It also only covers specific models. It appears that the government has thrown something together quickly to make it look like they are helping, without consulting the major stake holders in the industry.

Nova Scotia Power actually sells the heat pumps on a financed basis to their customers. They came and installed one for my father down there. So now he has a heat pump and pays them like $50 a month for it for a few years and it’s all done. Why doesn’t NB Power get on that train and help us out here?

      Hi Nick,
We’ve actually written about Nova Scotia Power’s rebate here: http://www.nordicghp.com/2015/02/need-know-nova-scotia-powers-heat-pump-financing-program/
We think it’s a great program and we’d love to see the same thing for rebates in New Brunswick.
