How to Choose a Geothermal Installer

Heat Pump Industry News

Geothermal heat pumps represent one of the top choices for residential heating and cooling in North America. They boast some of the highest efficiencies available on the market, and last for years longer than some of the other competing technologies.

They’re a completely green, renewable solution that provides superior comfort and low month to month costs. So how do we go about getting one?

While geothermal heat pumps may seem like a fairly straight forward concept, the installation of one definitely isn’t a DIY job. Specialized technical knowledge and equipment is needed to properly install the geothermal ground loop, and improper installation will result in poor performance of the heat pump. Due to this, we recommend finding a reputable installer in your area to install your geothermal heat pump.

Where to Look for a Geothermal Installer

Here at Maritime Geothermal Ltd, we offer a searchable database of our qualified dealers. Each of our dealers are required to have the necessary certifications to operate in their area, and many of our dealers have been installing geothermal heat pumps for decades.

It’s important to ensure the installer you choose is certified to install geothermal systems. If you’re located in Canada, geothermal installers should be certified by the Canadian GeoExchange Coalition. Fortunately, the CGC Website offers their own database of certified installers, making the search for a qualified, fully trained geothermal heat pump installer easier than ever.

In the United States, the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association offers a searchable directory of accredited installers who’ve been certified to install geothermal heat pumps. The certified installers listed in this directory have been through one or several training programs in geothermal system design and installation. This training is important because it ensure you get the right design for your home. A poorly designed system will result in decreased efficiencies, and higher than expected initial and monthly operating costs.

What to Ask a Geothermal Installer

Beyond looking for an installer that’s certified with either CGC or IGSHPA, it’s important to find an installer that you’re comfortable with. When meeting with an installer for the first time, ask for and check references of installations that are several years old. Don’t forget about the after care of the heat pump either, ask questions about whether the installer offers service should anything go wrong with the installation in a year or two, or if they can recommend someone who will? If you’re talking to a NORDIC® installer, contact us at Maritime Geothermal Ltd and we’ll gladly talk to you about our installer’s past performance and history with our company. Our priority is to have homeowners who are exceedingly happy with their NORDIC® geothermal heat pump, we want you to be successful with your geothermal heat pump installation!

Installing a geothermal heat pump should lower your utility costs and provide you with a clean and renewable source of heating, cooling and domestic hot water for your home. To ensure the highest quality performance of your system and reasonable costs, finding a reputable installer is essential. Follow the guidelines above to ensure your geothermal heat pump system is installed correctly by a reputable professional.
