Importance of Regular Maintenance

Many homeowners may be wondering why manufactures recommend having a technician do an annual maintenance check on what seems to be a perfectly running heat pump. Here are a few reasons:

Efficiency

When first purchasing a new heat pump it should run at the efficiency listed in the data sheet you studied on for so many hours. As time goes on, that efficiency begins to decline as wear and tear will take affect on any moving parts. Technicians have the necessary tools to check your system and make sure it is still operating properly. If there are any issues found, the technician can get your heat pump back in working order.

Lifespan

A healthy and well-maintained air source heat pump should last between 15 to 20 years, while the lifespan of a geothermal heat pump should be around 20 to 25 years. Geothermal piping that is properly installed can last anywhere from 25 to 75 years.

Self-Maintenance

Taking part in self-maintenance is also a great way to help with the efficiency and lifespan of your heat pump.

Changing the Air Filter – It is recommended you change your air filter every 3 months. A dirty filter results in restriction of air flow which then causes the heat pump to have to work harder to provide proper air flow through the house. Heat pumps are unable to work at their peak efficiency when air flow is being restricted, which therefore can lead to a shortened lifespan.

Proper Supply and Return Airflow – Heat pumps need proper air flow to operate efficiently. Having furniture, carpet, or anything on top of the registers restricts that air flow causing your unit to work harder than it needs to. Be sure that any objects are clear from your supply and return registers.

Debris around Outdoor Unit – If you have a split central air source heat pump, it is important to keep the area clear around the outdoor unit. In areas where you encounter large amount of snow fall, be sure to clear the snow away as it may cause problems. Outdoor motor failure and air flow being restricted from snow and ice build-up in the coils can cause unit to be over-worked, and therefore not operate at its proper efficiency.

Remember to keep a to-do list when it comes to maintaining your heat pump. Similar to any other operating system with moving parts they need to be looked after to operate efficiently. Get in contact with your local Nordic Dealer to have your heat pump serviced and be sure that your system is operating efficiently.
