Say Hello to the New Air to Water Heat Pump!

air to water heat pump
Tweet

After years of perfecting our geothermal heat pump product line, finding ways to innovate and providing our customers with exactly what they wanted, we finally decided to take the leap into a new kind of heat pump. This project has been months in the making, so we’re excited to finally announce the launch of our new Nordic air to water heat pump. See what our product engineer Dan Rheault has to say about it:

This new heat pump was no small undertaking. Maritime Geothermal has dozens of models of geothermal heat pumps, but we’ve never tackled an air source heat pump before. Fortunately, we had the skills and the know-how on our team to make this heat pump a reality, and we even came up with some new features and deviations from the standard air source heat pump design that will make the air to water heat pump a superior product for Canadian climates.

The Air to Water Heat Pump Outdoor Unit

The outdoor portion of the heat pump, which we’ve named the ACE unit, has been specifically developed for harsh Canadian winters. The unit is oversized to allow it to extract heat from the winter air, even in lower temperatures. This also means the outdoor unit will be super efficient at cooling in hotter climates.

The Air to Water Heat Pump Indoor Unit

On top of that, we also realized that the traditional design an air source heat pump had some major drawbacks in cold Canadian climates, so we redesigned it to better function in harsh weather. The indoor portion of the heat pump houses all of the major electronics and components, to keep them out of the cold and reduce wear and tear on the machine. This design also makes it easier to service the heat pump during cold winter months. It can be installed in a mechanical room, attic or crawl space due to its compact size.

The Nordic ATW Series will heat water for an in-floor radiant heating system, or it can also chill water for air conditioning with a hydronic air handler. Its energy supply source is not the ground, like with geothermal heat pumps, but the air. Even though it gets its heat from a variable heat source (the air gets colder during the winter), it will still be efficient due to our unique design. We expect our air to water heat pump to have an average coefficient of performance (COP) of 3.7 at an outdoor temperature of 45°F (7°C) and a COP of 1.3 at an outdoor temperature of -5°F (-20°C).

The air to water heat pump will is available in sizes up to 6 nominal tons, so one unit can heat and cool an entire home. We’ve also added a desuperheater to our design, which will allow it to generate domestic hot water for free in cooling season and with high efficiency in the heating season.

Want to learn more? Download our Ebook: All About Air Source, or find a dealer near you for a free estimate.

Are you an HVAC professional? The ATW Series is available now, contact us for pricing and availability or visit the ATW Series product page for manuals and specifications.

We have an electric boiler heating the water for our radiant floor which makes it very expensive to run (and therefore we rarely turn it on). Air to water heat pumps and people who install them seem to be very rare in Canada, especially in Ontario. The heat load is about 33,000 Btu. We would like to know how much this system would cost installed and if you have installers in the Peterborough Ontario area.

I am retrofitting the heating system in an existing home with a planned expansion bringing the total to ~3000 sq ft. Can this be configured for use with radiators as efficiently. Any info on installers/resellers in the Halifax area would be appreciated.

    • Jordann Brown

      September 21, 2015

      Hi Ted,

The air to water heat pump is designed to produce 120°F water, which makes it ideal for in-floor heating. Hot water radiators typically require water that is hotter than 120°F to adequately radiate heat. An experienced installer may be able to come up with a hybrid system that takes advantage of the efficiency of the air to water heat pump. You can find an installer in Halifax by using our installer locator: http://www.nordicghp.com/find-a-dealer/

    Hi Jordann,

We just built a superinsulated ranch house 3200 sqft that is currently being heated at -6c with a single Mitsubishi hyperheat FH18. We are having a bit of stratification between one end of the house and the other (minor, about 1.5 degrees), however for colder weather we are sure that a second unit will be required. This was planned for, but also just in case, we put 3000 ft of tubing in the slab. So perhaps using a unit like yours might make more sense.

Could you send me a price list please.

    Thanks,
    Darren

Hello Eugene, Saw your name as I was reading up about Air to Water and enquiring about dealers in Nfld. Putting 2 and 2 together I presume you are former MUN wrestler? I like to say Hello to former students. You may have heard that Keith Taylor is not too well so I visit him fairly often and he always quizzes me on any news, particularly former students. Now I shall mention you and his memory is fantastic of almost every team member and how they did back in the day.
Where are you living and are you building new or renovating, with thoughts of air to water heat pump systems.
Some years ago I built in Manuels and installed 3200 ft in-floor pex piping with a hot water boiler specially designed for in-floor. It is horribly expensive to have on any season, but especially in winter as it drives the bill out of sight. Have sometimes thought about water to water but done nothing yet. Wonder what your research and experience has been in the search for cheaper heat? Do please drop a line if and when the spirit moves.

      January 25, 2016

      Hi Anthony,

If you are located in Halifax, NS, you should work with a local installer to determine the correct sizing and how many units you’ll need. With a 4,000 square foot home, you’ll most likely need two units. For cooling, generally we don’t recommend in-floor cooling because that can result in condensation forming on floors. Instead, if you pair our ATW Series with our hydronic air handler, you can have ducted air conditioning.

      Here are several local installers:
Supercity Plumbing & Heating (Wayne Kedy)
Eco Air Heating and Air Conditioning Ltd. (Jeff Ingram)

Hi Barry, ENERGY STAR does not currently have a test for the air to water heat pump, but as soon as they create a standard, we’ll test the unit and get it certified, just like all of our other machines are. All systems are installed with back-up heat, which takes over at -20°C. The unit does not provide much domestic hot water preheating in air conditioning mode, but averages about 50% coverage throughout the year.

Hello, I have a 3000sq.ft slab on grade ranch that is currently being heated by a Daikin Air to Water 5 ton heat pump. When the temperature drops below -2 the system can’t seem to keep the house at a confortable temperature. The out door temp. Is -7 and I am showing 69 degrees at one end of the house and 66 at far end of the house.
What system do you recommend for the square foot.
The house is five years old and very well insulated . R 20 in walls plus 1 1/2″ ridged insulation on exterior. R60 in attic.
    Would appreciate input

    Thank you

      January 26, 2017

      Hi Paul,
For a home that size we’d recommend our largest size ATW Series, an ATW 75. This unit should be able to satisfy your heat load at most temperatures, and when it can’t it will call on the back-up heat that is always installed with it, so you’ll never be cold.
I’d be happy to recommend an installer for you!

Also, would it make financial sense to do so?

It’s time to replace my electric hot water tank, I live in the country and heat with wood (no gas, no oil, no propane).

    • Jordann Brown

      April 24, 2017

      Hi Andrew,

A small ATW Series heat pump could be used to indirectly heat a hot water tank. You’d still need a dedicated hot water tank because the ATW Series can only heat hot water to 120F, which isn’t hot enough to be a dedicated domestic hot water heater.

      Hi Stephane,
The ATW Series heat pump is shipped with enough refrigerant for a placement distance of 20 feet. The maximum distance is 80 feet, and you’ll need to add refrigerant for runs over 20 feet. There is a chart in the manual indicated how much refrigerant to add.

i have forced air oil in part of my house and in floor in heat not set up in my garage and mud room. will this unit heat and cool into the plenum of the forced air as the oil furnace is done and heat the flooring for the garage. I also have a pool and would like to heat in May with a heat exchanger set up.

      July 09, 2018

      Hi Brian,
Your distribution system (requiring both hot water and hot air) may be better suited to our ATF Series heat pump: https://www.nordicghp.com/product/nordic-products/air-source-heat-pump/air-to-air-water/
This unit will heat hot water for your garage and also heat and cool air for your ductwork throughout the rest of your home. You can set the air or water priority, in this case, you’d most likely set air. The heat pump will keep your home warm, and when it isn’t running to heat the air, it will switch over into hot water making mode to heat your garage floor.

I currently use a propane boiler to heat water for in floor radiant heat. Propane is expensive, so I’m very interested in hearing the floors with a heat pump instead (during the winter). But in the summer, can the same unit be used to cool the house by diverting the cold fluid into an air cooler? Would there be a valve that I switch over each spring and fall, to switch from heating mode (warming the floors) to cooling mode (cooling the air). Sorry, I’m new to this, so maybe I’m not explaining well!

    • Jordann Brown

      August 22, 2018

Hi Gordo, Thanks for your interest in an air to water heat pump! You have a few options for cooling in the summer time. The first option is to use an air handler and blow cold air through ductwork, but if you don’t have ductwork in place, it could be quite expensive to add. The second option is to do cooling from a single point using something like this: http://www.johnsoncontrols.com/en_sg/buildings/air-conditioning-systems/commercial/hydronic-chilled-water-fancoil-hydronic-wall-mounted
This will provide cooling but only for a single room, for example for your living/dining/kitchen area, similar to a mini-split.

Interested in your air to water heat pump system. New build. Looking to run 850 square feet concrete slab garage then above 850 square feet living area. Then above that 450 square feet Loft. Heat lines in floor and ready for air to water heat pump to warm the floors. Would like a diverter for summer mode to a hydronic air handler for cooling. I’m located in Port Severn Ontario. Called your dealer in Barrie, says sorry not interested 30 minutes is too far we don’t service that town. Called your dealer in Orillia they are backlogged and don’t seem like they could provide a timely solution. Put me in touch if you can with someone that would be helpful and be able to provide me a price.

Hi, curious what model ATW heat pump you would recommend for a new 2000- 2500 sqft slab on grade house with infloor hydronic? has electric boiler currently. Thanks

    • Jordann Brown

      October 01, 2018

      Hi Anthony,
In order to determine what size heat pump you’ll need, a heat load analysis must be done by a qualified HVAC installer. They will take many factors into account including your location, the size of your home, the insulation levels, the number of windows, and your current heating system to determine exactly how many Btu/hr are required to heat your home on the coldest day of the year. After that, they can use that information to correctly size your heat pump.
You can find a local installer by using our find a dealer tool, here: https://www.nordicghp.com/find-a-dealer/

    Hello,

I currently have a NG boiler that heats three radiant zones plus an indirect water heater. The potable water that feeds into the indirect water heater is pre-heated via a solar water heater. I have an air-handler that runs in summertime for the central A/C. Would your unit (1) be able to assume the duties currently carried by the NG boiler and (2) could your unit provide the cooling for the central A/C air-handler? Thanks. Cheers. Mike.

    • Jordann Brown

      April 08, 2019

      Hi Mike,
The main consideration here is to ensure that your current distribution system can accept the output temperatures of the ATW Series. This heat pump puts out 120F hot water, which steps back to 105F in colder temperatures. This is ideal for radiant in-floor heating, nut not hot enough for hot water baseboards. For cooling, you’ll need to change your AC unit to a hydronic air handler, which will use chilled water produced by the heat pump to cool your home via central ductwork.

I have a gas fired boiler (105,000 BTU/Hr) supplying a baseboard hot water heating system. I am interested in a possible “hybrid” arrangement using your ATW heat pump unit/assembly to reduce my winter heating cost and cool the building during the summer. Is this type of “retrofit” feasible? I am assuming any heating cost savings can be applied to cooling.

Can the air to water heat pump be tied into my existing baseboard registers?

    • Jordann Brown

      September 30, 2019

      Hi Shauna,

Air to water heat pumps produce low-temperature hot water (up to 120F) which is ideal for radiant in-floor heating but isn’t hot enough for hot water baseboards, which require hot water up to 180F. For hot water baseboards, you’ll need one of our high-temperature heat pumps: https://www.nordicghp.com/product/nordic-products/high-temp-water-to-water/

We are looking at heating a historic building requiring a 160 deg 180,000 btu/hr heat source. We are wondering about the practicality of running an ATW heat pump, powered by dedicated PV solar, to pre-heat a reservoir for a WTW heat pump. The building is located in Burlington, VT. It seems like there is a choice between adding batteries to power the ATW overnight or sizing the storage tank for overnight use. Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

    • Jordann Brown

      November 29, 2019

Theoretically you could do it if you made the solar system large enough, but doubt you would have enough roof area to power all those heat pump compressors. You’d also have to put in enough ATW’s to supply 180,000 BTU/hr (to the WH’s) at cold day conditions, which would be quite a few. And overall cold-day COP is not easy to calculate, but it would not be very high (maybe 1.2? that doesn’t matter directly if off-grid but would make the solar system comparatively larger).
