The Rexton Health Complex was built in 2010 as part of the government of New Brunswick’s commitment to expanding nursing home care in the province. The complex consists of the Rexton Health Centre and the Rexton Lions Nursing Home.

The health centre was built to replace two aging medical facilities. The new 10,600 square foot building houses facilities for specimen collection, dressing changes, wound management, injections, immunizations, chronic disease management and education. The health centre houses offices for five physicians and services 35,000 patients annually. The building was designed by Boyd R. Algee Architect Ltd. of Moncton, New Brunswick and the construction project was awarded to Retail Construction Specialists Inc. of Bedford, Nova Scotia.

Attached to the Rexton Health Centre by a corridor is the other building that makes up the Rexton Health Complex: The Lions Nursing Home. The nursing home is a 27,000 square foot facility with 30 beds. Most of the beds are in private rooms and each room has an adjoining washroom. The nursing home has improved accessibility and newer equipment. This part of the complex was also designed by Boyd R. Algee Architect Ltd. but the construction contract was awarded to Foulem Construction of Bathurst, New Brunswick.

Heated and Cooled With Commercial Geothermal Heat Pump Technology

The Rexton Health Complex is a LEED Silver Certified building and it is registered with the Canadian Green Building Council. The complex is heated by commercial geothermal heat pump technology, specifically six Nordic W-150 models. These units are water to water heat pumps that are fully reversible (for heating and cooling) and come equipped with desuperheaters for domestic hot water generation. The building has 12 geothermal vertical boreholes and six heating zones for maximum comfort of the residents. The total cost to build this health complex was $13.7 million.
